Novelista inglesa. Autodidacta, hija de Charles Burney, escribió entretenidos recuentos de las concurridas veladas musicales ofrecidas por su padre. El hábito de anotar sus observaciones sobre la sociedad que la rodeaba la llevó a escribir Evelina (1778), novela epistolar sobre el comportamiento social de una joven insegura. Evelina constituye un hito en la evolución de la novela de costumbres y abrió el camino para la obra de Jane Austen. Entre las últimas novelas de Burney se cuentan Cecilia (1782) y Camilla (1796), esta última de menos calidad que las anteriores.
